MBA Preparatory English Program (PEP)

July 18-August 13, 2008

PEP is a three-week intensive business English program developed specifically for international students who have been accepted into the Illinois MBA. PEP is designed to make the transition from another language, culture, and educational system much easier. All of the courses and materials have been designed by our instructors to prepare students for the rigorous demands of the program. Many of the assignments in PEP are similar to assignments that will be required of first-year MBA students. PEP is taught by a combination of specially trained ESL instructors and by Illinois MBA faculty. PEP provides the business English skills and cultural tools that students need to be successful in a team-oriented, American learning environment. The classes are small, so students get individual feedback on their progress.

Students will be informed during the admissions process if they are required to take PEP. Participation in PEP is strongly recommended for all international students. Students who successfully complete PEP will not have to take any other ESL courses at the University.

There is an $1800 fee for PEP. To register for the program click here.

Coursework in PEP includes specialized pronunciation classes, daily business writing classes, and business lectures to familiarize students with their professors and their teaching styles. For the final project, PEP students participate in a team case presentation similar to those required during the first year of the MBA program.

PEP Curriculum

  • Business Writing

All PEP students are required to buy UIUC student insurance while attending PEP. Students are permitted to enter the country July 16, 2008.  Due to the short time between the students' arrival and the beginning of PEP, we strongly recommend that students stay in University Housing throughout the program. Please contact University Housing at (217)333-1766 or mailto:conference@illinois.edu.edu.

If you have questions about PEP, see our PEP Frequently Asked Questions or contact Student Affairs.
