FAQ

Q: I would like to come for a visit, can you arrange a tour?

A: Yes.  We would be happy for you to visit us on-campus. See our information about campus visits for details on scheduling your visit.

Q: What is the minimum GMAT score required?

A: We do not have a minimum requirement. Our average GMAT for this year's entering class is listed in the admissions profile.  We look at the entire application packet when making a decision.

Q: What is the minimum TOEFL score required?

A: We do not have a minimum requirement. Guidelines on the university's requirements are listed here

Q: Do I need to take the TOEFL test (international students only)?

A: Unless you have studied for two years (within the last five years) as a full-time student, or completed a graduate degree, in a country where English is the primary language, you will have to take the TOEFL. The test scores are valid for two years and must be current at the time of enrollment.  Depending on your level of English you might be required to take an English language program the summer before you begin your MBA studies at Illinois.

Q: Which score does the Admissions Committee consider if I take the GMAT and/or TOEFL more than once?

A: The Admissions Committee will only consider your highest test score.

Q: If I am a Joint Degree student, do I need to take the GMAT, even if I already took a different graduate school test (such as GRE or MCAT)?

A: In order to apply to the Illinois MBA, you are required to take the GMAT. You also must take the appropriate test for the other school in which you are enrolled.  Joint degree students must apply to the MBA for the term in which they plan to enroll in the MBA. See Joint Degree for more details.

Q: Do I qualify?

A: The admissions committee for the Illinois MBA will look at the entire application. Please refer to our application requirements.

Q: Are there any prerequisite courses required for admission?

A: No. We prefer that applicants have successfully complete one semester of college-level calculus and economics before enrollment.

Q: Do you accept transfer courses?

A: No. Due to the strategic nature of our first-year curriculum, we can not accept any transfer courses.

Q: What is the average years of work experience? Do you have a minimum work experience requirement?

A: The average work experience for last year's class was over four years. We recommend that you have a minimum of two years experience, but we will consider applications, on a limited basis, from strong individuals with less work experience.

Q: What is the average age?

A: The average age is located in our admissions profile.

Q: What are your typical placement figures?

A: See Career Services placement statistics for full information.

Q: What is the workload during the program?

A: During the first year, you'll take five to seven classes per module (there are two modules each semester). Each course is 1 unit or the equivalent of 4 semester hours. Plan on spending at least 20 hours per week on studying, group work, or doing homework. Students with a business degree may find that some of the work is review and will be able to spend less time on certain classes. During the second year, you'll take four classes per semester in a chosen area of concentration.  See curriculum for further information.

Q: Can I get the application fee waived?

A: The application fee is collected by the Graduate College to defray administrative costs of processing the application.  This fee cannot be waived, nor can it be deferred until a decision is made.

Q: What is the cost of the Illinois MBA?

A: See Tuition & Fees for full information.

Q: How do I know if I qualify as an Illinois resident?

A: This information can be accessed through the University of Illinois Residency Status Regulations, or refer to the FAQ page about residency.

Q: What kind of financial aid is available?

A: Most students finance the costs of their Illinois MBA from scholarships, student loans, internships, graduate assistantships or campus employment. For more information see Financing Your Illinois MBA.

Q: How long does it take to make a decision regarding admission?

A: Once your application is complete, you should be notified in four to six weeks during the peak admissions period. The Admissions Committee will begin reviewing completed applications in December. Some decisions will be deferred until May. You will be advised within six weeks of submitting your completed application if this is the case.

Q: Are interviews required?

A: Interviews are by invitation only. Interviews will only be offered to those who have completed their application as this will help give us a complete picture of an applicant.  The interview is evaluative and provides the Admissions Committee with more information on your qualifications and career goals.

Q: I have applied, why isn't my online status updated?

A: It takes approximately 10 business days from the time your completed application is received before your online status will be updated.  You will be notified by email if your application is missing any required materials.

Q: Can my admission be deferred?

A: The Illinois MBA will not defer an admission.  If you are unable to attend the program for the year originally admitted to you will need to reapply for the following year.  Admission requirements change from year-to-year so you will need to contact the MBA Admissions Office to find out what new materials you will need to submit.

Q: Can I have my application reviewed again if I improve my credentials?

A: The Admissions Committee's decision is final.  The Admissions Committee does not reconsider decisions.
